Italy, Guardia Sanframondi (BN), Aug. 2010: The town of Guardia Sanframondi, within the mountains of Sannio, near Benevento. Here, every seven years take place the penitential rites of Battenti, in honor of the Madonna dell'Assunta. During a whole week the town is crossed by the processions of mysteries, in which are lively represented some scenes from the bible and the history of christian world, until the conclusive sunday when take place the procession of battenti, some chosen people dressed with a white hooded robe, that beat their chest (and breast if women) with a 33 needles sponge, wetting their hurts with vinegar, as a penitential tribute.
